Sandy found lying face down on the beach, beak in the sand
Brenton-on-Sea, South Africa. The morning she was found.

how it began

Found face down in the sand

On an April morning at Brenton-on-Sea in South Africa, a jogger slowed for a small dark shape on the beach. It was a penguin. Face down, beak buried in the sand, not moving.

African penguins are critically endangered now. There are not many mornings like this one left to waste. So a call was made, and people came running.

how it ended

Carried back to life

A wildlife vet and a medical assistant reached the beach fast. They lifted the penguin in a towel, settled her into a box, and drove for the nearest clinic.

The vets found only a small wound. Then warmth, fluids, quiet, and time. Sandy ate. Sandy stood. Sandy was going to be alright.

Sandy saved.
